Welcome to the (new) Donut Database, which I'm happy to have adopted from Natalie at Bake and Destroy. I have lots of big plans to make the database better than ever.... in the meantime, check out the interactive donut-finding map, on the right side of the blog....
Thanks to my friends at Really Really Big Industries, Inc.my compilation of all the homemade donut shops in the US and beyond is an interactive map! This means you can add your favorite shop directly to the map for others to discover and squeal with delight!

I trust you guys not to get weird with it, but here are a few ground rules:

No Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme or other large-chain donut shops

Only add non-donut shop bakeries that offer homemade donuts daily

Use purple push pins to indicate a donut shop

Use green push pins to denote a shop with vegan donut options

Use pink push pins to denote bakeries that also serve donuts

What about a bakery that also serves vegan donuts? I don't know! You pick what's more important to you! If you're new to shared Google maps, check out how to contribute here.

This image was Tweeted to me by @RetroBakery this morning - what a way to start the new year! I was pretty sad when Starbucks stopped carrying Top Pot Doughnuts so it's good to see some form of my favorite morning treat available. I haven't tried them yet, but I've seen mixed reviews all over the Interwebs.

You can check Starbucks.com to see if they're available in your 'hood - we warned... these little suckers are 120 calories and 6 grams of fat each.
I knew donuts would save the Earth someday, but this wasn't quite how I imagined it. Nevertheless, you can reduce your carbon footprint with these coffee and donut-print snack and sandwich bags by snackTAXI. Available in two sizes at ReusableBags.com, these help to reduce the number of plastic baggies we throw away every day.

Plus, the larger size is perfect for an actual donut. Take it with you to your favorite donut shop and ask them to place your treat in this bag instead of a paper one. Just shake it out, and it's good to go the next day. It's not really so much a game as it's a weird way to serve doughnuts to children at your Halloween party. I have to say I would not like to play Doughnuts on a String - especially not if anyone was taking pictures - but I would very much like to watch other people play.

If you are too stupid to figure out how to put doughnuts on strings, you can find the instructions at MarthaStewart.com.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2381203994923134975.post-42893508694505416552009-09-10T07:24:00.000-05:002009-09-10T07:31:55.100-05:00Oh hai, Mr. Donut!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2381203994923134975.post-84197519264412907572009-07-26T16:33:00.003-05:002009-07-26T16:47:17.940-05:00A Visit to Homecut DonutsAmong the many things I did not appreciate about my hometown of Joliet when I still lived there, there is Homecut Donuts. National Doughnut day, traditionally the first Friday of June, honors the Salvation Army "Lassies" of WWI. It is also used as a fund raiser for needy causes of the Salvation Army.

The original Salvation Army Doughnut was first served by Salvation Army in 1917. During WWI, Salvation Army "lassies" were sent to the front lines of Europe. These brave volunteers made home cooked foods, and provided a moral boost to the troops. Often, the doughnuts were cooked in oil inside the of the metal helmet of an American soldier. The American infantrymen were commonly called doughboys. Salvation Army lassies were the only women outside of military personnel allowed to visit the front lines. Lt. Colonel Helen Purviance is considered the Salvation Army's "first doughnut girl".

(Info sited from holidayinsights.com)

In addition to being a way patriotic, donut-themed holiday, it is also a day when many well-known donut retailers offer free donuts with the purchase of a coffee. (Offers vary, be sure to harass your local Dunkin Donuts and Krispie Kreme for your free donut.)

Happy Doughnut Day, y'all!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2381203994923134975.post-49442762584899777872009-06-04T17:37:00.003-05:002009-06-04T17:38:51.391-05:00Caged Tomato <3s DonutsI thought you'd like to know that Carrie, the lady behind my most favorite donut artwork ever over at Caged Tomato now has a blog.
