Donut Tracker 2010

Welcome to the new and improved Donut Database! Thanks to my friends at Really Really Big Industries, Inc.my compilation of all the homemade donut shops in the US and beyond is an interactive map! This means you can add your favorite shop directly to the map for others to discover and squeal with delight!

I trust you guys not to get weird with it, but here are a few ground rules:
  • No Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme or other large-chain donut shops
  • Only add non-donut shop bakeries that offer homemade donuts daily
  • Use purple push pins to indicate a donut shop
  • Use green push pins to denote a shop with vegan donut options
  • Use pink push pins to denote bakeries that also serve donuts
What about a bakery that also serves vegan donuts? I don't know! You pick what's more important to you! If you're new to shared Google maps, check out how to contribute here.

Feel free to add pictures, videos and reviews to your posts or other people's posts. Email me at Donutroundup@gmail.com with any questions or comments.

Donut Snack & Sandwich Bags

I knew donuts would save the Earth someday, but this wasn't quite how I imagined it. Nevertheless, you can reduce your carbon footprint with these coffee and donut-print snack and sandwich bags by snackTAXI. Available in two sizes at ReusableBags.com, these help to reduce the number of plastic baggies we throw away every day.

Plus, the larger size is perfect for an actual donut. Take it with you to your favorite donut shop and ask them to place your treat in this bag instead of a paper one. Just shake it out, and it's good to go the next day. (There are further care instructions on the product page.)

Holey Donuts Low-Fat Mail Order Donuts

A donut with fewer than 3 grams of fat? What kind of pixy magic is going on over at Holey Donuts?

My eyes said, "whaaaaa?"
My mouth said, "nooooooo!"
And then my eyes told my belly about Boston Cream Oreo and Blueberry Vanilla Cinnamon Buns and my belly said, "yeaaaaaah!"

I can't personally vouch for these as I have yet to try them, but the flavor combos have me intrigued. I noticed they're cholesterol-free so I'm wondering if they have any vegan flavors for my vegan friends? What say you, Holey Donut?

National Doughnut Day

Quite possibly the greatest holiday of the year! National Doughnut day, traditionally the first Friday of June, honors the Salvation Army "Lassies" of WWI. It is also used as a fund raiser for needy causes of the Salvation Army.

The original Salvation Army Doughnut was first served by Salvation Army in 1917. During WWI, Salvation Army "lassies" were sent to the front lines of Europe. These brave volunteers made home cooked foods, and provided a moral boost to the troops. Often, the doughnuts were cooked in oil inside the of the metal helmet of an American soldier. The American infantrymen were commonly called doughboys. Salvation Army lassies were the only women outside of military personnel allowed to visit the front lines. Lt. Colonel Helen Purviance is considered the Salvation Army's "first doughnut girl".

(Info sited from holidayinsights.com)

In addition to being a way patriotic, donut-themed holiday, it is also a day when many well-known donut retailers offer free donuts with the purchase of a coffee. (Offers vary, be sure to harass your local Dunkin Donuts and Krispie Kreme for your free donut.)

Happy Doughnut Day, y'all!

Dunk 'em if You Got 'em!

It's no secret that I'm obsessed with Caged Tomato's beautiful prints. They're literally all over my house, taunting me with delicious donuts, coffee, veggie burgers and whatnot at every corner.

But then she went and made this one. I swear to Godzilla I will get this tattooed on me.

$15 - it doesn't get any better.

April 23- Day of the Donut

Thanks much to Nancy of Circa Ceramics for bringing this to my attention - I am ashamed of myself for not finding it first. According to Flickr group We Demand Donuts!, April 23 is Day of the Donut! They are celebrating by organizing donut meet ups all over the country!

Check out the group discussion to see if there's a meet up in your 'hood. And if there isn't, organize one and let everyone know!
